Orcas are alert in elephant seals colonies because the pups elephant seals, without experience, they approach a dam breaking and are accessible to hunting by intentional stranding, a technique developed by the families of Orcas of Peninsula Valdes.

The wildlife and adventure photographer, Alejandro Avampini , is updating his website with several images from Valdes Peninsula, work which has began in 1994, the year he arrived in this town with his Nikon and some black and white slides rolls. Nowadays his work is a reference for all those new photographers looking for adventure activities and wildlife . He was invited to photograph different places, collecting rich material for several ecological fundations of several countries from America, contributing to take conscience in the preservations of fauna and natural waters courses , like Puerto Rico´s manatees, white turttle at Mexico and humpback whales at Dominican Republic.

Alejandro also contributes to every ecologic fundation in Argentina which requires his contribution. A month ago he was jury at the last underwater photography contest organized by the Puerto Madryn's Diving Asociation.

Lately, we are living uncommon whale watching days. Luckily we could use pictures to communicate, without many words, the experiences we want to convey.

The adventure and nature photographer Alejandro Avampini, owner of the Eco Hotel and creator of this blog passed these images to help frame this story. All this day, in all their trips,the catamaran Pinino VII Whales Argentina had the pleasure to find one of the many whales that are in the bay of Puerto Piramides, making an exhibition of his tail throughout the day.

One of the causes that generate this position known as Tailing, being with the tail out of water. Experts say that they do it as prepartum work. With the help of gravity, this position will accommodate for the birth, the baby of 5 meters and several tons, that it's in the womb. Therefore, will be born in coming days.
The mother can hold this position more than 10 minutes,and then returns to its horizontal position,to take a breath, renew its air and show again its tail, amazing design of nature.

Sailing over the Golfo Nuevo departing from Puerto Piramides is, at this time of the year, a success for those who look for the contact with the whales. The Whale Watching trips depart evey day starting at 10 am, and going again every 2 hours depending on how many people is interested. The last tour could be at 4 pm.

The morning trips are always ready to go, cause is that time when travel agencies come with groups of people. The midday and afternoon trips are very nice because the number of passengers is smaller, but they need a minimun of 7 passengers to go. Punta Piramide it’s the symbol by excellence of Puerto Piramides. In the latest whales watching, whales appeared nearby the town coast, and the ships have past very close to the sandstone and millions years old fossils.

Punta Piramide and the 132 hectares that surround it, are part of a reservoir created in February 1974, known as Punta Piramides Reservoir. White Whale, a peculiarity on the Whale watching tours in Puerto Pirámides

The white whale it’s a nature’s rareness. Just like in others species, there are some whales born with their skin white instead of black because of the lack of pigmentation. It’s not very common to see them during a whale watching in Puerto Pirámides, but it is probably that a couple of this peculiar white whales born every year.

Their behavior it’s just the same as any other whale: they jump, feed of its mother and show us their tail! This year, in November, we could see one of them around Valdes Peninsula waters. Luis Pettite, photographer, shared with us this photos, and we share them with all the followers of the Eco Lodge’s blog.

The difference between this albinism and another animal’s albinism, it’s that in whales tends to disappear in their first years of life. While the years go by, their skin begins to get darker, going from white to grey, and finally black. As you can see in the top image, this white whale is son of a young white female whale who hasn’t get her skin dark yet.

If you see one of these whales underwater, they seem to be green, because of the water’s transparency.

Dieser Ort ist ein Naturreservat und wurde 1999 von der UNESCO auf die Welterbeliste gesetzt. Die Halbinsel Valdés besteht größtenteils aus karger Landschaft und einigen kleineren Salzseen, derer größter mit 35 Metern unter dem Meeresspiegel den tiefsten Punkt der Halbinsel bildet, und eine der niedrigsten in der Welt.

Die rund 3625 km ² 3625 km² große Halbinsel Valdés liegt in der argentinischen Provinz Chubut an der Atlantikküste.Von besonderer Bedeutung ist die Halbinsel wegen der Meeressäugetiere, die sich an ihrem Ufer und vor ihren Küsten tummeln. Dies sind an der Küste Seelöwen und See-Elefanten.

Der von der Halbinsel und einer Landzunge des patagonischen Festlands gebildete südliche Golfo Nuevo ist Lebensraum der Südkaper. Diese Bartenwalart kommt in der zweiten Jahreshälfte hierher, um sich fortzupflanzen und ihre Jungen zur Welt zu bringen, da das Wasser im Golf ruhiger und wärmer ist als auf dem offenen Meer. Im offenen Meer, vor den Küsten der Halbinsel, leben auch Schwertwale (Orcas).

Jedes Jahr, zwischen Mai und Dezember, tummeln sich hunderte von Glattwalen (ballenas francas) rund um die Halbinsel Valdés. Puerto Pirámides ist der einzige Hafen in ganz Argentinien, der Ihnen anbietet, dieses spektakuläre und unvergessliche Erlebnis hautnah zu erleben, aber auch einen respektvollen Umgang mit diesen Riesen der Meere.

Es gibt an den Küsten mehrere Kolonien der Magellan-Pinguine (Spheniscus Magellanicus), die nicht so groß sind wie die in Punta Tombo, aber dennoch hochinteressant für den Tierliebhaber. Das Erstaunlichste an diesen ist das Fehlen jeglicher Scheu vor dem Menschen. Man kann sich ihnen bis auf Armlänge nähern, ohne dass sie flüchten oder Drohgebärden zeigen. Man muss sogar Acht geben, dass man ihnen nicht auf die Füße tritt, so arglos sind diese Vögel. Diese Magellan-Pinguin-Kolonien leben friedlich in unmittelbarer Nähe zu den gewaltigen See-Elefanten.

Das Innere der Halbinsel ist eine trockene und heiße Steppenlandschaft mit kniehohen Sträuchern und von der Sonne verbrannten, dürren Grasbüscheln. Trotz des Klimas wird sie von zahlreichen Tieren bevölkert, wie dem Nandu (Südamerikanischer Straußenvogel),dem Guanaco (Verwandter der Lamas), den Maras und dem Gürteltier.
Einziger bewohnter Ort auf der Halbinsel ist das Dorf Puerto Pirámides. Ein Dorf mit 500 Einwohnern. Puerto Piramides ist die Stadt, wo sich unser umweltfreundliche Hotel befindet.

Puerto Piramides is the only village inside Peninsula Valdes, where no more than 500 people live and who have the incredible honour of being in "the middle of nowhere". Beaches, animales and amazing sunsets area common in this piece of a Human Heritage.

It is located 97km from Puerto Madryn , about an hour driving from the bus station or the Airport; and about 180 km from Trelew. Both cities have a population bigger than 100.000 people each.

The Provincial Route 2, that drive us to Puerto Piramides, starts from National Route 3 and from the access from Puerto Madryn. Is a quite route, but every driver must be careful with wild and free animals like guanacos, sheeps, armadillos, maras wich usually cross over the route.

All the tourists, who visit the region between June and December to watch the whales from boats, stay or stop by our small village because is the only port for whale watching in Argentina.

Not every tourist who visit Puerto Piramides sleep inside the Peninsula Valdes . Every year more than 300.000 tourists get to Peninsula Valdes, and Puerto Piramides has only 500 beds distributed in small hotels, cottages and a hostel. To those 500 beds, we have to add the public camping and some estancias inside the Peninsula. The rest of the visitors, returns to Puerto Madryn or Trelew. Puerto Piramides is the ideal place to stay, for those who want to take a rest in a very quite village wich is perfect to use as base to visit other spots in Peninsula Valdes

Puerto Piramides offers the possibility of enjoy uniques sunsets over the sea and night skies full of stars. The nights with full moon (and almost full moon also) are suitable for long walks over the dunes. The moon light is enough to see everything and contemplate this blue planet floating in the cosmos.

Its beaches extensive and smooth declivity towards the sea are protected by "bardas", a kind of cliff that delimits the plateau and go down to the small coastal valley where is located Puerto Piramides, and natural spot that every summer congregates thousand of tourists, making the first 15 days of January very annoying, but after that tourist invasion, the place retakes its paradisiac harmony.

The name Puerto Piramides is attributed to some formation wich shapes are pyramidal throwing to conical, we can find them in places as the Reserve Punta Piramidees. In this geography are natural deposits of fossilized invertebrates that register an antiquity, in some cases, of up to nine million years.

Although the Whale Watching Tours has its tourist relevance, it is not the unique attraction, also there are other interesting activities as snorkeling/diving with sea lions the diving and, kayak, mountain bike and horse ridings

When you enter to Peninsula Valdes, almost half way between Puerto Madryn and Puerto Piramides, you will stop by the boxes where you must pay the park fee, the value depend on age and origin.

The village provide basic services. There are some groceries stores, bars and restaurants, a first aids hospital, police station, a firemen station, and a gas station. The gas station also is used as bus station for the only public transport that arrives to our village, its name is " Mar y Valle" and its shedule changes along the season it has from 1 daily bus to 4 or 5 per day. This profesionals has started to became reality a movie project which was around their minds for 8 years, since the same team were filming "La puta y la ballena" in a co-production with Luis Puenzo (Argentina).

The movie is inspired in the book "Agustin Corazonabuerto", written by Beto Bubas, a very sensitive and kind park ranger who lived with the orcas along 12 seasons and was in touch with them creating affection bones with them. Patagonia Argentina, offers one of the best places in the world for whale watching. The morphology of this region of South America offers calm and protected waters, where this giant mammals has choosen to get birth to their calves and for mating (as other species also do), turning this World Heritage in a huge nursery.

The Southern Right Whale, every year, appears every early May, day by day the number of whales increase more and more and is when El Doradillo (a beach in the way coming from Puerto Madryn to Puerto Piramides) becomes in the most suitable place to watch and feel them really close from the coast.

When September begin, Valdes Peninsula reach the maximun in numbers of whales. Puerto Piramides becomes the undisputed place to watch the curious and friendly behavior of the animals aboard the Whale Watching from boats, by the way the only port for this activity in Argentina.

The season keep on going during October and November, with whales and more whales around; during those months we can see many different behaviors: the females wich already give birth, can be seen next to their calves, much more skinny than when they arrived, and the females that have not give birth are the most wanted between the males who "harass" them creating one of the most extraordinary courtships of nature.

During it first year of life, the calf, keep close to its mother from who they are nursed. On the next stage, previous to become adults, the calf get away from its mothers and they are known as sub-adults.

By the first week of December, is well known how to the whales starts their way toward the south of the south hemisphere. In the last years, whales has been seen in the first days of January, after long sailings. Brief chronology of the Orcas Season.

Between late February and late April you can see the Orcas from shore.At Punta Norte sea lions colony. The high tide mark is the likely timetable orcas attack. There are 2 high tides per day and 2 low tides, with an interim period stationary, about 20 minutes. The schedule of the tide goes out running every day between 20 minutes and a little over an hour later with respect to the previous day.

That is why daily Orcas attacks sea lions happen in a progressive manner. When the Orca stranding on the beaches of Punta Norte very early in the morning, there will be a high tide late sunset. That are just a couple of days per month, days are called double tide.

Dawn hours generally are more productive for the orcas. .As playful and carefree behavior, sea lions on the coast, waking with the light of the day, move back and forth from the beach, playing in the frontline in a fairly dangerous distraction.

In the front desk of the Eco Lodge daily, coordinate these special trips for photographers, filmmakers and wildlife lovers who want to increase the chance to witness this unique event.

Small groups of filmmakers from around the world, meet in Punta Norte between February and April in order to achieve this goal. The Eco Lodge had hosted the 2009 season the team from the National Geographic for 20 days managed to film Mel attacks, the most famous whale in the attack channel.

The documentary was made in three stages of a meticulous and successful effort. Began in 2008 and ended in 2009 at Peninsula Valdes, film show the different behaviors of the orcas, as the intentional stranding hunting for sea lions pups on the seal colony at Punta Norte, from end of February to April; and the elephant seal pups in Valdes Creek in November. They had the advice of the ranger Roberto Bubas, a specialist on our beloved Orcas.

If you are interested in knowing more about how they worked on this documentary, you can read all articles from National Geographic. We were doing the backstage of this filmmakers team in this area. Work was in the hands of the Nature Photographer and owner of the Eco Lodge Alejandro Avampini.

NHK Japan also was filming at Valdes Peninsula in the Orcas attack season . With the East patience in the attack channel, within 5 hours required of the tide, more than 30 days were stationed, awaiting the appearance of the orca stranding, and they succeeded, sometimes not easy to make shots with good light and good angle, that is why they decided to remain one month in our Town Puerto Piramides.

And missing something if we don´t mention the Beto Bubas and Orcas experiences. He was a Park Ranger for 12 years between Caleta Valdes and Punta Norte, their research is a legacy that proves the Affection bounds that a human can have with marine mammals misnamed Killer Whales. Today Beto Bubas is working at Punta Loma Reserve near Puerto Madryn.

Argentine Nature and wildlife Photographers visit every year Punta Norte, as in the case of Andres Bonetti with more than 17 seasons of Orcas and Gabriel Rojo, with more than 10 seasons.

Penguin Caleta Valdes, an exclusive housing complex for a few penguins

The biologist Roger Paine, a visionary of the whales conservation and sea worldwide, was in Puerto Piramides, he stayed at the Eco Lodge.
