Elephant seals in numbers in Valdes Peninsula

According to information given by the provincial park ranger poster information in Punta Delgada, there are 500 harems of elephant seals in the 200 km of sea coast of  Valdes Peninsula , the harem females from 2 to 130 copies. Only 14% there are dominant males mating recorded a maximum of 15 per day per individual. Another surprising fact is that 73% of births occur at night and the index of pup mortality is 4.4%.

The males weigh 4 tons, eight times more than a sea lion and elephant seals females weigh 900 kg. Mothers lose weight 13kg per day while feeding the child to an increase of 4 kg over the same period. Dives can make continuous, long and deep, day and night and fitness for diving improves with age, reaching more than 1,500 m proof and for distances, have registered 11 500 km covered in one year.

They can be 90 minutes, holding the breath,renewing all the air in just 2 minutes on the surface, which is why 80% of their time in the ocean is spent underwater.
