Whale Rider - New Zeland film Where the protagonist is also the Southern Right Whale

Whale Rider is a 2002 New Zealand drama film directed by Niki Caro, based on the novel of the same name by Witi Ihimaera. The film stars Keisha Castle-Hughes as Kahu Paikea Apirana, a 12-year-old girl struggling to become the chief of the tribe, a role traditionally reserved for males.

It is a beautiful film told from the other side of the southern hemisphere, where also the southern right whale go to have their calves and copulate.You can see Right Whales, their distribution on the planet.

  1. we call them "Tohora" in New Zealand and they even appear in the myth which tells about the beginning of the nation.

    Now, right whales showing such an remarkable recovery in recent years, the number of migrating whales and sightings doubled from 2008 to 2009.

    They are still critically endangered in NZ, however, a sub-population at Auckland Islands showing amazing growth and they are now known to interact with another population at main islands New Zealand!
